Preschool Christmas Activities Learning For Every Letter

Preschool is my favorite place to celebrate the holidays! Three, four, and five-year-olds really know how to see the magic in the Christmas season. This thematic Unit has a Christmas song or book for each letter of the alphabet as well as a fun learning activity to practice important academic skills. It teaches math (color, patterns, counting, sorting), reading (letter sounds/names, CVC words, and lots of great read-aloud), fine motor skills (crafts, coloring, art projects), teamwork, and gross motor skills, music, sensory learning, and more!

1. Playdough Mat

The colored playdough looks like frosting on the cookies or ornaments on the tree. If you're up for a little mixing you can give your little ones sequins or beads to make the ornaments sparkle and add sprinkles to the cookies!

2. Counting

Cut out the marshmallows and have your kids add the mallos to the drinks. Kids love it if you use real marshmallows (they are also a little easier to pick up than the paper, it is good fine motor practice too). I'm always tickled at the amount of joy a preschooler gets from eating marshmallows and playing with balloons haha

3. Patterns

Have students create patterns with the colored Christmas light cutouts. Younger students can sort the lights by color. You can also use the lights as a measuring tool. Have them practice lining them up to measure small items in the room and then compare sizes.

4. Color Matching

Pom poms are in the same category as marshmallows and balloons. They are really loved at preschool (and it's amazing how much learning goes on playing with those little things)! Students can decorate their tree with Velcro dot ornaments or place pom poms on the same color dot to decorate the tree.

5. CVC Word Practice

Mix and match the mistletoe with the leaves to make new words. I often do this in small groups or one on one and help students where they are in their phonemic awareness. For my pre-readers, I use this as a time to practice letter names and sounds and model breaking apart words into each phenom and blending them together again.

6. Printables

So many fun worksheets, coloring books, and activity pages for students to really enjoy learning and reviewing each letter in the alphabet.

7. Craft and Art Projects

Crafting out with kids is great for teaching fine motor skills and for social-emotional learning too! I'm a big fan of process art and think kids should be doing their own artwork without too much help from teachers. Some of these projects require minimal help while others require more prep for teachers. (For free craft ideas check out my Christmas craft blog HERE.)

8. Games

Games are so important to teach structure, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Some games that are included are jingle bell freeze dance, Christmas tic-tac-toe, and find the animal in the blizzard.
